Our
Philosophy |
|
Today's
leaders must manage natural resources to provide a promising
fututre for our grandchildren. First Nations, industry and
governments can develop sustainable businesses practices
that will allow this to happen. When we take something from
Mother earth, we must then provide something back in order
to perpetuate the needs for future generations.
Our
culture and economic differences among various groups leads
to great conflict due to a misunderstanding of the needs
of the different groups. Th'ewali Resources LTD.
has acknowledged this lack of understanding and offers leaders
the ability to bridge the gap between the demands of business
and the understandings of out Ancestral Knowledge.
Resolving
conflict in a positve way benifits both the First Nations
and their neibours.

Soowahlie
Band Urges Steven Harper to Curb MP John Cummins |
Chilliwack:
The Resource Manager for the Soowahlie Band says that
MP John Cummins is simply a sore loser because on March
29, 2001 the Supreme Court of Canada denied an application
for leave to appeal from a group calling itself the B.C.
Fisheries Survival Coalition in the fishing case, Huovinen
vs. Regina.
In
this legal contest, George Huovinen, and members of the
B.C. Fisheries Survival Coalition, attempted to convince
the Court that it was illegal for the fisheries minister
to license a fishery for Aboriginal communities, which
included the sale offish, while, at the same time, excluding
non-Aboriginal commercial fishers from that fishery. "To
make a long story short, the Court of Appeal of B.C. found
that the minister had the legal authority to license such
fisheries, and that the Survival Coalition was, basically,
out to lunch. Unhappy with this decision, the Survival
Coalition then applied for leave to appeal the decision
to the Supreme Court of Canada.

On March
29, 2001, the Supreme Court of Canada turned down their
application. Now, Alliance MP Cummins is talking about a
Parliamentary Committee proclaiming Aboriginal Communal
Fishing Licenses illegal. Are the members of the Survival
Coalition, and their political champion, MP John Cummins,
suffering from short term memory loss? I can't believe that
MP Cummins actually thinks that the opinion of a Parliamentary
Committee set up to look at government regulations is going
to result in the trashing of a decision by the Supreme Court
of Canada", said Crey.
Crey
said that he thinks Alliance leader, Stephen Harper, needs
to take MP Cummins aside before the 2002 summer fishing
season gets underway and say to Cummins, "Look, Spanky,
you and your friends in the Fisheries Survival Coalition
need to stop, take a deep breath and come to terms with
the fact this fight is over and you must learn to respect
the law. That's how it works in Canada".
As for
the Department of Fisheries,Crey
says that he is certain that fishery officers will uphold
the law this summer and, if need be, lay charges against
MP John Cummins and members of the Fisheries Survival Coalition
in the event they choose to flout Canada's fishery law.
