Th’ewali Fisheries Ltd.

Hello and thanks for visiting our website. The Th’ewali Fisheries Company is a new business, and was incorporated in October of 2001. The company was formed by the current Chief and Council: Chief Doug Kelly, and Councilors - Nelson Kahama, Grant Commodore, and Bruce Sam.

The Soowahlie Council and their management team carried out an extensive community planning process during the 2001 year, and developed an economic plan as part of that process. Part of the plan includes a strategy to form business partnerships to sell Hatchery Surplus Fish, and to eventually get into more fisheries related business ventures.

The head office for the Th’ewali Fisheries Company is located within the Soowahlie Band Office.Currently to date Th’ewali Fisheries Ltd. has negotiated one joint venture agreement with Cormorant Fisheries Ltd., and entered into many partnership discussions with other companies. In the fall of 2001 we jointly operated a program called the Hatchery Surplus Program.

We signed a Memorandum of understanding with DFO. to manage this program. The program activities took place mainly at the Chilliwack River Fish Hatchery. We employed 4 Band Members at this site. While on-site our crew carried out many fish harvesting activities for the hatchery.

We hope to be able to market approximately 200,000 cubic meters of different varieties of Fisheries in the near future. The Council’s vision is to see the Band become completely self sufficient one day, and to build Soowahlie into a much more healthy, cultural, and prosperous community.
